What are Career Paths?

Career Paths are clusters of occupations/careers that are combined together because the people in them share similar interests and strengths. All paths include a variety of occupations requiring different levels of education and training.

The six Hawaii Career Pathways are:

• Arts & Communications
• Business, Management & Technology
• Health Services
• Industrial & Engineering Technology
• Natural Resources
• Public & Human Services

Selecting a Career Path provides you with an area of FOCUS along with FLEXIBILITY and a VARIETY of ideas to pursue. Concentrating on selecting a Career Path can enable you to make an initial career decision. The idea of selecting a specific occupation for the rest of your life can be overwhelming. The intent is not for you to decide on an occupation but to select a career path or field of occupations in which you can begin directing your energies. Deciding on a Career Path can help you prepare for your future when selecting courses in school (electives, career academies, co-op programs, vocational courses, summer internships, etc.) school activities, and part-time employment.

A Career Path choice is not a permanent commitment. As you have new experiences, you will learn about yourself and may change career paths. If you decide on a new career path, you should discuss it with your counselor and family and adjust your future course selections to match your new career direction.

How do you decide which Career Path best fits you?

1. Start by thinking and learning more about yourself and identifying your areas of interests, strengths, talents and expectations.
2. Consider possible occupations listed for the career paths in relationship to your interests and strengths.
3. Select courses that are related to your Career Path and learn about advanced career preparation options.

Arts & Communications

Occupations in this path relate to the humanities and performing, visual, literary, and media arts. This may include architecture, interior design, creative writing, fashion design, film, fine arts, graphic design and production, journalism, languages, radio, television, advertising, and public relations.

Business, Management & Technology

Occupations related to the business environment. These may include entrepreneurship, sales, marketing, computer/information systems, finance, accounting, personnel, economics, and management.

• Conventional

Health Services

Occupations related to the promotion of health and the treatment of diseases. These may include research, prevention, treatment, and related technologies.

• observe patients and look for changes in how they are doing
• help people stay well
• learn about new diseases
• study how the body works

Natural Resources

Occupations related to agriculture, the environment and natural resources. These may include agriculture sciences, earth sciences, environmental sciences, fisheries, forestry, horticulture, and wildlife.

• good at observing behaviors and changes

Industrial & Engineering Technology

Occupations related to the technologies necessary to design, develop, install, or maintain physical systems. These may include engineering, manufacturing, construction, service, and related technologies.

Occupations related to Human Services (adoption, child protection, clergy, early child care, geriatrics, guidance and counseling, human services, mental health, psychology, social work), Education and related (teaching, consulting, counseling, research), Legal Services (adjudication, advocacy, mediation), Protective Services (corrections, criminal investigation, law enforcement, mediation, security), Social Sciences (anthropology, economics, geography, political science, sociology special studies, regional planning), and Services and Hospitality (cosmetology, food service, hotel operations, tourism).
